Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
